We recommend carrying bear spray when recreating outside during summer, especially if you venture off Big Sky Resort property. Grizzly and black bears, mountain lions, moose, elk, and mountain goats are commonly seen in the area. For your safety and the animals', always view wildlife from a distance, make noise to alert animals to your presence, and carry bear spray.

Our guides carry bear spray and are educated in wildlife safety to provide peace of mind while you explore.

Bear spray is a high-powered pepper spray used to deter aggressive bears or mountain lions. Be sure to acquaint yourself with the product (you spray it at the bear, not on yourself) by reading the instructions and watching how-to videos.

Bear spray can be purchased at Big Sky Sports in Mountain Village. Hey Bear, located in Town Center, also rents bear spray. Bear spray cannot be flown in checked baggage or carry-on luggage. If you have unused bear spray, drop it off at Big Sky Sports for safe disposal before your departure.

Fully-enclosed shoes are required for all of our summer activities and tours. Shoes like hiking boots or tennis shoes will protect and stabilize you on our rocky terrain.
