The Way I Ski It: Big Sky Resort's Blog

The Mountain is White!

Ahhh, what a sight this morning when I walked out the front door and was greeted to a glistening, bright white mountain!  As the countdown continues to opening day, the excitement is palpable around this resort community.  In the past month I've been considering new gear, figuring out whether to buy pants or a jacket and have been watching ski movies non-stop.  It's enough to drive a person crazy waiting for those first turns.

Despite the resort being closed and the buildings silent, the mountain team has been working feverishly in preparations for a successful season.  Ski Patrol changes out their mountain biking gear to their ski boots and the snowmaking teams wait patiently for the temperatures to hit that magic, optimum, sustained low temp to fire up the guns.  One big project which has been on-going for months is the replacement of the Tram cable.  When the decision to replace it was decided, we immediately phone our friends in Austria to order the part.  The giant spool then is shipped across the Atlantic and trucked to Big Sky to then be dragged up to the station with the help of a bulldozer.

The reports from the team have been very positive as this complicated procedure is done, they've completely replaced the cable and removed the old one and now will be working on the finishing details to have it operational in plenty of time for Lone Peak's opening.  So in case you heard a silly rumor about the Tram this summer, you can be rest assured we'll be waiting for snow and safe conditions, not on any maintenance before we're spinning laps on the Gullies, Lenin or Marx.

Hang in there with us as we all anticipate opening day.

We'll see you out there,

Dax
