Where did the season go?

Great coverage to finish the year and a new shield to proudly wear

WHERE DID THE season go? It seems like just yesterday I was writing my first blog of the winter and getting pumped for another great season. But I guess the saying holds true; time does fly when you’re having fun.

From opening day turns and turkey to goggle tans and spring bump runs, it’s definitely been another season to remember. Lone Peak delivered as it always does and dished out its consistent cold smoke, long and smooth wind buffed runs, and gladly allowed us to bounce around its massive playground.

Powder days were plentiful with one of the snowiest Februarys that I can remember. No matter the day it seemed like the skiing was going to be great. Even starry nights were met by bluebird mornings, and sometimes to our amazement, a bountiful blanket of 18 inches of fresh for us powder hounds to enjoy. It was truly a winter of plentiful smiles, high fives and pole taps.

To top off the great snow, Big Sky had you covered with entertainment. Events and festivals like Way Alt West Fest kicked off the New Year and old favorites like Big Sky Big Grass, Dummy Jump and Pond Skim continued their reputations as guest favorites.

Then to really place a cherry on top, our guests (you) shared your exceptional experiences with OnTheSnow. The result: OnTheSnow honored us for the 2nd time in 5 years with their Visitors’ Choice Overall Best Resort in North America. Thank you for your support, it means a great deal to us to be your favorite and thank you OnTheSnow for this wonderful award, we’ll wear our badge proudly.

While our 39th winter season is sadly coming to an end, we have our 40th Anniversary to look forward to and if it’s half as good as this year it’ll surely be another to remember.

After the lifts close this coming Friday at 4pm,
Big Sky Resort’s mountain village will look – and sound – a bit livelier than usual.  Yep, that’s right – this weekend marks the 7th annual Big Sky Big Grass bluegrass festival, complete with 3 days’ worth of performances as well as a new music camp, headlined by some of the industry’s finest musicians and bands.

Many other ski resorts wait until the summer season to hold their music festivals.  But here at Big Sky we combine the opportunity to experience the world class terrain of the Biggest Skiing in America by day while offering foot-stompin’ good tunes and great times by night.

It goes without saying that BSBG has only gotten bigger – and better – with each passing year.  This year, for the 7th annual, we’ve raised the bar even higher, offering the Sam Bush Band, the Del McCoury Band, the Emmitt/Nershi Band, the Travelin’ McCourys and Special Consensus, all with a lineup that encourages the cross-picking and special guest appearances that festivarians have come to expect.  The lineup also includes new, more progressive acts, such as Pete Kartsounesand Trout Steak Revival as well as Friday night’s “Libation Station” featuring wine & beer tastings and a regional band competition.

One of the greatest things about this festival is that you don’t have to be a die-hard bluegrass fan to enjoy it.  Bluegrass music tends to encompass multiple genres within its own realm.  Take last year’s Sunday evening show with Greensky Bluegrass in Whiskey Jack’s, for example.  From local lift operators to vacationing parents, everyone in the room took part singing, dancing and yes, shouting, when the band busted out a bluegrass cover of the classic hit “(You Make Me Wanna) Shout.”

In addition, not only are the musical acts unique at BSBG, but so are the venues.  Shows in the Talus Room are small, intimate and sit-down.  The Carabiner has the quintessential après ski environment, while Whiskey Jack’s provides the late-night barroom party that many folks are looking for, and finally the Missouri Ballroom has space and grandeur fit for our Grammy-winning headliners.

So what do you have planned this weekend?  If you’re looking for great skiing and an amazing amount of fun that you and your friends won’t soon forget, come check out Big Sky Big Grass.  For tickets, lodging deals and all the information you’ll need, click here.

Can’t wait to see you there for all the fun!

Montana: The New Nashville?

11/6/2012 9:40:00 AM

Bluegrass music.  For many, it brings to mind notions of the Beverly Hillbillies and southern backwoods, moonshine-induced, foot-stomping calls of “YEEE HAWW!”  For others it is indistinguishable from pop country a la Taylor Swift or Tim McGraw.  Still others associate it with free-loving “Festies” or the new generation of Woodstockers.

In reality, all of these nuances are correct in some way.  Bluegrass music today remains highly influenced by its “Father,” legendary
Bill Monroe, but is often eclectically mixed with more modern elements and styles.  And while the geographical heart of bluegrass still undoubtedly lies south of the Mason-Dixon, the Rocky Mountains of Montana are becoming prime country to find some of the finest bluegrass picking around.

Just this past week I took the time to jump on tour with the Grammy-nominated
Infamous Stringdusters during their sold out, two-night, Halloween-themed stint in Big Sky Country.  The band donned neon sunglasses to a costumed bunch at Bozeman’s Emerson ballroom, only to be followed 24 hours later with a wild crowd (and head to toe lycra on each band member) at Missoula’s Top Hat.

The energy each night was, hands down, incredible.  The music – well, it just couldn’t get any better.  The band’s fiddle player and famed vocalist
Jeremy Garrett perhaps said it best on his Facebook page after the Bozeman show:  “I had one of the most fun music times I have ever had in my life... I don't know if you really know what that means, but it is true. I love you Montana. I really really love you. Can't wait till tomorrow.”

Garrett elaborates more on the band’s
website: “The type of people who listen to the music that we play, and are coming to the shows, are also people who go on epic hikes, or ski, or ride mountain bikes, or get out and experience life from all angles.  The new song on our latest record called ‘Night On The River’ has been going out to a lot of people.  Rafters come up after the show to talk about it…The music sort of sets up the background for your life.”

And perhaps the ultimate intersection of bluegrass and Montana life can be found mid-February at
Big Sky ResortBig Sky Big Grass, gearing up for its 7th annual festival in 2013 has become a can’t-miss event for Bluegrass lovers, skiers and just about everyone in between.  Unlike its larger, summertime counterparts such as Telluride, BSBG Festival-goers ski and ride powder at the Biggest Skiing in America by day and stomp their heels to some of the industry’s finest by night.  This year’s lineup includes The Sam Bush Band, The Del McCoury Band, The Emmitt-Nershi Band and The Special Consensus, just to name a few.  Past acts will tell you there truly is something special about the unique mountain setting paired with the onstage (and offstage) picking.

No, it isn’t Nashville here in Montana.  But then again, we like it that way.

Online Ticket sales for Big Sky Big Grass begin on November 15th.  Stay tuned to
