mountain fest to kick-off the spruce moose music festival
8/15/11BIG SKY, Mont. — Why float through the dog days of summer when you can paddle? Join the excitement when participants launch their cardboard creations onto Lake Levinksy for the Cardboard Boat Regatta, a part of Big Sky’s Mountain Fest on Saturday, September 3rd. Mountain Fest, with a 5K run, live music, the Cardboard Boat Regatta, and other family activities, will help kick off the Spruce Moose Music Festival which starts later that evening.
Mountain Fest will begin with the 5K Trail Challenge on Lone Peak’s Moose Track’s Trail at 9:30am. Free registration begins at 9am in the plaza.
Next, Geyser Whitewater Expeditions and Big Sky Resort will team up for the Cardboard Boat Regatta, in which participants will race homemade cardboard boats across Lake Levinsky and attempt to stay afloat. Registration is free and open to the public, costumes and boat decorations are encouraged, and personal flotation devices are required for all participants. The fun starts at 11am when cardboard boats will be inspected on the shores of Lake Levinsky.
Cardboard Boat teams should form now to ensure plenty of time to design, build and modify a boat for the competition. Registration forms and the rules are available on-line at bigskyresort.com. Teams are asked to fill out the online registration form, then e-mail, mail or fax the form before the race day. Teams failing to abide by the rules will be disqualified.
Following the race, rent a paddleboat at the Marina on Lake Levinsky or head up to hear the After Midnight Band play in the Mountain Village from 12pm – 3pm. Music, food, and Basecamp activities including the climbing wall, bungee trampoline, and zipline trips will be available throughout the afternoon.
Summer gear from local businesses will also be on sale in the plaza. Big Sky Sports will sell selected items up to 70% off. Other retail businesses participating are JP Woolies, Native Accents, Paparazzi Fur, and Plum Logo.
