Soar Through The Tree Tops With Big Sky’s New Ziplines.
2/05/09BIG SKY, MT. – Need a break from the powder skiing? Take your Big Sky experience to new heights with a thrilling ride down the newly constructed zip lines located in the Moose Tracks tree-tops. The Zipline will operate over President’s weekend and then every Saturday through the season. Zip trips head out from the Snowsports School in the Snowcrest Lodge at 9 a.m., noon, and 2:30 p.m. accommodating groups of 12.
The Zipline built by Global Expedition, Inc., consists of a pulley suspended on cables mounted over an incline that provides thrilling rides and great views. The three Big Sky lines range in length from 350- 500 feet in length and riders can reach speeds up to 25 miles per hour. Riders must be at least four feet tall and weigh between 75 and 300 pounds.
The Big Sky Zipline is made up of three such lines and begins in the trees off Lower Huntley Hollows. The first line takes riders 60 feet over the Middle Road and brings safely back to earth in the trees below the exit of Lobo. The second line begins just below the landing and ends next to the bottom of Pacifier. The third and final zip takes you back across and returns you to the bottom of Lower Calamity Jane.
Participants currently will ski down Calamity Jane to the entrance with their guide and group; however plans to incorporate a snowshoe trail to the first line are in the works. At the start of the first zip line a runner will pick up skis, poles and boards and shuttle the gear down to the finish of the third line.
The entire process will be about two hours to complete. Participants should dress warmly as the experience will be outside during the training and safety demonstrations. Helmets are mandatory and are provided, as well as all the necessary gear by Big Sky Resort, however a personal helmet is acceptable.
Big Sky Resort is the first ski area in Montana offering a zip line experience and is exploring the service in the summer to complement the downhill mountain biking and scenic lift ride adventures.
