Calling all Dummies for February 10 Dummy Jump

1/29/07

BIG SKY, Mont. - You'd have to be a dummy to miss the party at Big Sky Resort on Saturday, February 10 when locals will launch their dummy creations high to the sky. The event coincides with a weekend of charity with Saturday being U.S. Ski Team day where the resort will donate $1 for every lift ticket sold to the U.S. Ski Team and Big Sky is hosting the Jimmie Heuga Snow Express for M.S.

For the Dummy Jump the fun will start at 1 p.m. when the dummies will be lined up near the Summit clock tower to be judged on creativity. Teams should form now to ensure plenty of time to design, build and modify a dummy competitor. The rules are simple, it is asked that all dummies resemble an organic life form, have a theme, be manageable by no more than two people and be designed with modesty (i.e. clothing) for the younger audience in attendance. There will be a second category for non-life form creations.

There is no fee to submit an entry or to attend the event. Registration forms are available on-line at www.bigskyresort.com or available by request at the Sales and Marketing office at 995-5886.

Following the base area activities, at 2 p.m. the dummies will begin their first and only ascent up the mountain to be put into position to let gravity work its wonders. At 3 p.m. the fun will really get rolling when the dummies are shoved off the starting gate toward a kicker complete with a flat landing. The judges will be taking notes to determine the best jump, best form, most sturdy, best amplitude and finally, the best explosion upon impact.

The explosion requires more explanation, as explosive devices are not allowed, the landing itself should create enough impact. Another lesson learned for those who missed the events of the past is that a lot of weight and a low center of gravity are key to a successful launch and subsequent splat upon landing.
