Ski and Splash!
4/12/07BIG SKY, Mont. - Get out the costumes, old skis, even a swimsuit because it's pond-skimming time. Now in its 4th year, the annual Spring Run-Off at Big Sky Resort is back and better than ever. The pond skim is accompanied by a full day of events and live music that will extend far into the night. Saturday, April 14, is a day of celebration as the ski season comes to a close.
A 100-ft pond is built at the base of the headwall on Ambush for skiers and snowboarders to test the water. The event is free to spectators and prospective skimmers and swimmers are required to register and sign a waiver, entry fee is $20 and includes a t-shirt. Registrants under 18 years old will require a guardian's signature. Registration will begin at 1 p.m. at the Summit Clock Tower; space is limited so sign up early. At 3 p.m. brave participants speed down the run and try their best to make it across the chilly pond to impress the hundreds of spectators.
Beginning at noon, the plaza will be hopping with music from DJ Joe and children's activities including face painting and a bouncer room. The Burger Bar will be open for food and libations throughout the day. Following the pond skim, musical guests Ridiculous Orbitz will perform live in the plaza at 4 p.m.
At 7 p.m. the live music moves inside to Whiskey Jack's. Bozeman based Hooligans will open followed by Melvin Seals and the JGB. The JGB was an American Rock band led by Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead. Garcia started the band in 1975. Of his many side projects, it was the main one, until his death in 1995. The JGB continues to play his songs and draw great crowds at all of their shows.
Tickets for the Whiskey Jack's shows are sold out for Saturday night, however, there will be a special performance by the Hooligans and the Melvin Seals Band on Friday, beginning at 9:30 p.m. Tickets for the Friday show are $10 at the door.
"The crowd and excitement builds every year at Spring Run-Off," said Big Sky PR Manager, Dax Schieffer. "I'm pretty sure last year at the pond skim I saw a bear, ballerina and even a leprechaun skimming across the pond, costumes are encouraged and rewarded by the crowd."
