The Jack is Back
11/24/06BIG SKY, Mont. - For those new to town, Whiskey Jack's won't sound very familiar, but just ask those who arrived 10 or more years ago and the stories of the venerable bar and restaurant will pour as freely as the spirits did behind the bar. Those who arrived before 2004 will remember the Dug-Out at the top of Ramcharger, the current site of the Pinnacle at Big Sky.
The Mountain Mall is an original building dating from Chet Huntley's introduction of skiing in the Big Sky area in the early 70's. In the early 80's the Ore House was built in the current location of Whiskey Jack's. In 1985 "the Jack" moved in with a complete remodel including the importing of an elaborately carved bar from Great Falls.
For the next 10 years the convenient location, great food and top musical talent made Whiskey Jack's the top apres ski scene for the burgeoning ski resort. As the resort continued to grow, including the construction of the Yellowstone Conference Center in 1990 and the building of Snowcrest and the Lone Peak Tram in 1995, the management of the Whiskey Jack's went to a third party who operated it as an Italian restaurant called Dante's Inferno. Last summer, the management shifted back to Big Sky Resort.
Whiskey Jack's will be open for the winter season with both a lunch and dinner menu as well as serving the hearty favorites for any great apr?s scene with beer specials and a five-layer nacho platter.
The menu will feature gourmet burgers such as the Bourbon Street with Creole spice, smoked ham and saut?ed red onion. Another burger choice is the Minuteman that is topped with grilled Ortega pepper, avocado, onions, jalapeno straws and Sonoma pepper jack. For a lighter fare, choose from the Tequila lime chicken tostada salad or the Fajita or Southwest Cobb salad.
