Next Phase of Multi-Million Dollar Village Expansion Begins

8/08/05

BIG SKY, Mont. ? BIG SKY, MT.- Big Sky Resort broke ground today on the first of several structures that will re-shape the core Mountain Village over the coming decade. Village Center One, which will enhance the current pedestrian plaza and expand the retail and dining options at Big Sky is scheduled to open for the winter 2006-2007 season. This four-story building, located just north of the Snowcrest Lodge, will also offer innovative slopeside work/play entertainment suites.

The pedestrian plaza level of Village Center One features approximately 10,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space, which will offer additional services available to locals and visitors.

"Communities are built around areas where people can congregate and take care of everyday tasks. As Big Sky's Mountain Village evolves, it will be the pedestrian focal point of the community," said Stephen Kircher, President of Eastern Operations of Boyne USA Resorts. "We are striving to make the Village experience as wonderful as the ski terrain experience."

Each of the 49 entertainment suites are planned to have conference/dining table, fireplace, work station, entertainment kitchenette, comfortable seating, high speed internet access, television, bath with shower and a wall bed and sleeper sofa if an overnight stay is required. Many units will have direct access to the snow, and all have a secure interior hallway entry. The suites are approximately 475 square feet and will be ideal for business people who wish to stay connected with their clients as well as their skiing. Additional expanded luxury suites will occupy the signature tower ends of the building and will be ideal for entertaining larger groups.

Village Center One takes the Resort another step closer to fulfilling its Master Plan for a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly Village at the foot of the slopes. The Summit at Big Sky, and the Mountain Inn, both built in the last five years, created the additional overnight guest capacity to support more shops and restaurants. Ski terrain and lift expansion during the 1980?s and 1990?s greatly elevated the resort?s stature among destinations. Now the emphasis shifts to developing intimate architecture and multi-use spaces that are concentrated in the core area.

"As a company, we have set some lofty goals for achieving guest satisfaction and sales growth. An enhanced Mountain Village is essential to moving Big Sky one step closer to becoming the nation?s foremost alpine resort," Kircher said. "We are using some of the best talent in the region, if not the country, to plan a Village that best integrates people-friendly buildings and public spaces with the magnificent location we?ve been blessed with."

It is anticipated that the construction costs of Village Center One will be approximately $23 million and the project will employ approximately 100 local workers when fully underway.

The Village Center One construction team consists of:

  • Developer: Big Sky Resort, a Boyne USA Resort
  • Architecture & Interiors: CTA Group, Bozeman, MT
  • General Contractor: Rotherham Construction, Bozeman MT
