Meetings Quarterly- Successful Historic Meetings

In August 1805, the first successful meeting happened in Big Sky Country.

The Shoshone, superb horsemen and brave warriors who once hunted bison on the abundant plains, had been driven into the mountains, reduced to hunger and poverty by musket-wielding rival tribes.  “If we had guns, we could live in the country of the buffalo and eat as our enemies do, and not be compelled to hide ourselves in these mountains and live on roots and berries as the bear do,”[sic] said the Shoshone chief, Cameahwait.

Captain Meriwether Lewis and members of the Corps of Discovery, fresh from a camp at the headwaters of the Missouri River at Three Forks, near Big Sky, Montana, were stumped in their quest to find a river to the sea by the daunting Bitterroot Mountains before them.  They needed horses and a guide to lead the way.  “If we do not find [the Shoshone],” wrote Lewis in his journal, “I fear the successful issue of our voyage will be very doubtful.”

It was Sacagawea, a young Shoshone woman travelling with Lewis and Clark, her infant son strapped on her back, who laid the foundation for an auspicious meeting between the two groups.  Recognizing the rocks, the river and the land of her childhood, she guided the Corps to her people and in joy and surprise reconnected with her brother, Chief Cameahwait.  Convinced of the Corps’ peaceful intent, the Shoshone welcomed the first white men they had ever seen to their village, shared their meager food supplies, and – with Sacagawea as interpreter – traded their horses for much-needed guns.  A family reunited, a deal struck, the Corps of Discovery moved on to the Pacific and the Shoshone returned to the buffalo rich plains.
